There is evidence of increasing anxiety and depression among young women aged 16 to 24 in the UK, with nearly one-third (31%) reporting some evidence of depression or anxiety in 2017 to 2018 (...) this is an increase from the previous year (26%) and the same period five years earlier (26%).
We at The Wellbeing Generation feel strongly about empowering the next generation and setting them up for success. This is why we’ve created the Next Gen Programme.
We have delivered our programme in the Oxfordshire area, and are pleased to have received further funding through the Bucks County Boards to deliver our work in the Amersham & Villages Community Board areas. This funding is available to directly benefit the local community in the Amersham & Villages area.
Our project is comprised of three levels:
Bronze:
Assembly talks, open to all.
Silver:
Open to 50% of total participants. This will include yoga sessions and a mindfulness programme, combining in-person sessions and at least 50% of online classes to ensure its accessibility to a wide range of young people.
Gold:
A coaching programme, for which we will onboard two groups of 8 young people. Recruitment has taken place with the assistance of the Local Enterprise Partnership schools network, as well as support by the Bucks County Board team.
Over the scope of the programme, we have been grateful to be able to connect with over 400 young people.
Here is what some of them shared about their experience working with our team of practitioners:
“In these sessions, we would talk about positive things that happened that week, and we would share our opinions on many things. When we all got to know each other I felt like there was a safe, calm environment. We would also listen to different types of music and share how it made each of us feel. We all had very different views! Towards the end of the sessions, we would do some calming yoga. I found this very relaxing and benefited from it immensely.”

“The aim of doing these sessions was to be able to keep a positive mindset through any challenges in life. And to teach us that it is okay to talk about your feelings to someone else. Overall, I think that these sessions have helped out a lot. I would definitely do it again and highly recommend you give it a go too!”

“Every Thursday for the past four weeks myself and a few other students have attended well being sessions meant to improve our confidence and help us find healthy coping strategies to deal with things like stress and anxiety. I have found these sessions helpful as I have learned some strategies to deal with stress such as breathing techniques, self-care and how to calm myself down in stressful situations. We did things like movement exercises, drawing, listening to music and discussing our feelings and how we as individuals cope. I found it beneficial and enjoyed it.”

We will be delivering our final programme in 2024, and would like to thank Bucks County Boards for their ongoing support of our work to empower the next generation to thrive rather than survive.
